Space Charging

The space occupied by divisions/departments in University buildings is subject to two annual charges:

  • capital charge
  • premises related infrastructure charge (PRISC)

These charges are determined by the Planning and Resource Allocation Section (PRAS) using area data supplied by Estates Services.

The Information Management team is responsible for collating the raw space data and notifications received from departments, adjusting the figures to take account of various exemptions and exceptions to normal charging rules, such as Capital Charge abatement, rents paid directly by departments and the treatment of ‘embedded’ space in NHS buildings on hospital sites. There are further exemptions and exceptions related to particular space and service elements. Calculating the various space and occupancy charges is a complex process which hinges on the timely notification from occupying departments.

Departments are responsible for advising Estates Services of inaccuracies or changes to room layouts or space usage – contact the team – and are advised to check their space data regularly.  Contact the Information Manager if you have any queries relating to space charges.
