Security

Oxford University Security Services (OUSS) provide the University with a trained team of Security Officers and advisers.

OUSS monitor external CCTV around the University, respond to incidents of crime, work in close liaison with Thames Valley Police (TVP), advise departments on security matters and provide security for University events.  OUSS will also provide (at a charge) an alarm response and key holding service to departments.

Departments however are responsible for:

  • controlling access to their buildings (including access control systems)
  • management of any internal CCTV
  • managing lock up procedures for their building

For advice and guidance on physical security please contact OUSS.

Access Control

Across the University Estate many different access control systems and software are currently used. Work is taking place to identify one preferred access control system for all future projects. Negotiations are currently underway and once finalised, details will be available here. This initiative will enable the University to enjoy the benefits of consolidated purchasing and consider a shared database across departments.

University Card Project

The University card has been upgraded to provide proximity and magstripe technologies. The new card has been issued since July 2012.  Details of the card project can be found here www.admin.ox.ac.uk/pras/valueformoney/shared/

The identified access control preferred system will utilise the new proximity ability in the Oxford University (OU) card. Departments are now able to consider utilising the University card for other initiatives such as:

  • cashless catering
  • photocopying
  • lockers
