  • Biological Safety and Genetic Modification, an introduction

Course Details

The delineation between biological and non-biological work is less clearly defined than in the past and many of the traditionally more technical departments are now also undertaking biological work. This may include the handling of blood, tissue and other body fluids, cell culture work and genetically modified micro-organisms.

Strict precautions may be required for such work to proceed and robust systems established to ensure that the work is in accordance with relevant legislation. It is also a requirement of University Policy Statement S5/09 that individuals who engage in such work, or those who plan to do so, receive suitable instruction and training.

The Safety Office is offering an introductory course on biological safety and staff for whom this is a new activity are required to attend.

  • Carriage of Diagnostic and Infectious Substances

This is a CAA and IATA approved certification and revalidation course for biological facility managers, Biological Safety Officers, or any laboratory or research worker involved in sending samples to, or arranging receipt of, samples from other institutions or field collections, either from abroad or from within the UK (Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations are based on these transport by air regulations).

Course Details

Material of biological origin used in research or teaching may present a hazard and require special handling for transport, and all samples represent an investment in time, effort, and resources and they should always be packed and labelled properly, and accompanied by appropriate paperwork to prevent damage or loss during carriage, regardless of whether transport regulations apply or not. Material subject to transport regulations must be packed under the guidance of a trained and certified individual within an organization. This course helps departments and laboratories fulfil that obligation. At the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand their legal responsibilities
  • Locate information from all sections of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations
  • Locate State and Operator Variations
  • Select the Proper Shipping Name from the List of Dangerous Goods
  • Locate and identify information shown on the Shipper's Declaration and the Air Waybill
  • Select the correct packing using the Packing Instructions and the General Packing Requirements
  • Correctly mark and label a package in compliance with Dangerous Goods Regulations
  • Check a Dangerous Goods Acceptance Check List
  • Certification is valid for two years after which this course must be re-taken.

  • Cell Culture Techniques, Good Laboratory Practice & Use of Microbiological Cabinets

Biomedical or life science students and research workers using, or intending to use, cell culture techniques and/or micro-biological safety cabinets.

Course Details

A video-based training session covering all aspects of best practice in cell culturing, including working safely, and the safe use of microbiological cabinets; and the basic principles of good microbiological practice.

This training session is being updated to provide a more usable format. Inexperienced lab workers must always be given one to one training in the labs in which they are to work but in the interim please contact Andrew Thompson ( requesting course material to support such training.

  • Safe Use of Cryogenic Liquids

An essential course for any individual using cryogenic liquids and for those who manage installations. Departments should identify any training requirements and ensure that relevant individuals attend the course where necessary.

Course Details

The use of liquid nitrogen and other cryogenic liquids is extensive in the University. The hazards associated with their use are significant, and information, instruction and training on all aspects of cryogenic liquid use is a requirement of University Policy Statement S4/03.
